Dumping System of  Planetary  Exploring Robot

            A planetary exploring robot consists of three main functions – a driving system, a ball collecting unit and a wooden tray with dumping system.  From many competitions we participated in, we found that our robot had several problems which are slow movement, discontinuing of ball dipping and ball dumping speed.
We discussed and decided to solve the problem of slow ball dumping caused by the wooden tray for better scores in the next competition.

Aims and Objectives

            To improve the wooden tray for faster dumping.

            1.  To increase speed when dumping balls from the wooden tray.
            2.  To get higher score in competition.


            To improve the wooden dumping tray, we used seven technological processes;

           1. Problem Definition and Requirement

            The problem from previous planetary exploring robot competitions was the speed of the ball dumping system which was too slow, so we discussed and decided to solve this problem.

           2. Data collection

            To cope with this problem, we studied and consolidated data from a variety of sources including textbooks and the internet. Moreover, we gained some good advice from intellectuals in town. Some were related to plywood, acrylic sheets, rope, wire, slop and friction which significantly helped this improvement.

            3. Selection of  solution

            Dumping balls by gravity force.

            4. Design and Practice

            To improve the wooden dumping tray, we used three elements as follows.
             1.  Light sensor ( using light to control the tray)
             2.  Rope and wire (using rope and wire to control the tray)
             3.  Tension force and gravity force enhanced by the slop of wooden tray. (using tension force and gravity force to control the tray)
            After reviewing the 3 elements by analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each one, we finally chose the third element- enhance the tension and gravity force by the slope of wooden tray – to solve the problem.

           5. Testing

            Measured time taken of balls dumping for 20 times and calculated for the average.

           6. Improvement and Development

            Made the wooden dumping tray lighter to gain more tension and gravity force.

            7. Evaluation

             Compared the speed of balls dumping by using the tension force and gravity force with the general method (mechanical control).


            The average time of balls dumping by using the tension force and gravity force enhanced by the slop of the wooden tray was faster than the general method and easy to dump.
